Harkishan Singh Surjeet

In the first part of his political life, Harkishan Singh Surjeet was influenced by many converging strands of radical politics. First, the initial radicalism of the Akali Party, of which his father was a Jalandhar district organiser and leader, interacting with the Congress and Khilafat movements. Secondly, the uncompromising revolutionary spirit of Bhagat Singh, the shining hero of his youth. Thirdly, the excitement and twists and turns of the freedom struggle, as it marc hed towards independence, combined with the working people’s cause.

In his early teens, Harkishan was initiated into anti-colonial activity by his father, Harnam Singh Basi, and his more radical political associates. He joined Bhagat Singh’s Naujawan Bharat Sabha, participated in the Congress movement, and enrolled in the Congress Socialist Party in 1935. In 1934, he made a lifelong commitment by becoming a member of the illegal Communist Party. He subsequently made a name for himself as a kisan sabha organiser and leader. During Partition, he worked strenuously for communal harmony.

As Mr. Surjeet recalled to an interviewer in 1997, his grandfather was a well-to-do peasant who had worked in Australia for several years and returned with his savings. The boy’s father, who served in the army, embraced the freedom movement at the end of the First World War; for this, he was sent away from home and virtually disinherited but was eventually given two acres by his father. He immersed himself in politics and became the head of the Akali Party’s Jalandhar district organisation. Harkishan’s illiterate mother, who came from a non-Sikh family, was an embodiment of fortitude and a source of immense strength to the family. In 1929, her husband left for the United States to make his fortune but his plans failed and he was unable to send any remittance home for five years. (He worked for a while as a bus-driver in Panama.) As a consequence of all this, the family suffered great economic hardships during Harkishan’s early years.

In 1930, the 14-year-old was approached at home by leaders of the illegal Workers and Peasants Party in Punjab and asked to organise a meeting in the village, which he did effectively. The next day, the police were waiting for him at school. Although the headmaster, who knew the family, was sympathetic and wanted to protect him by getting him to apologise, he could not avoid expelling the rebellious schoolboy – who, saying he had “not committed any sin,” refused to apologise. There was no other school in the vicinity and, after a great deal of effort, well-wishers had Harkishan admitted to the Khalsa School in Jalandhar town. His mother had to work extremely hard to make the ten rupees a month (Rs. 4 each for fee and food, and Rs. 2 for milk) available for his residential schooling.

Daredevil act

In 1932, 16-year-old Harkishan came into political prominence on a larger stage through a daredevil act. He had just completed the written part of his matriculation examination and was awaiting his science practicals. The district Congress committee had announced that it would hoist the Tricolour and bring down the Union Jack atop the Hoshiarpur district court building. But after the district authorities threatened to clamp down on such seditious action and deployed the army, the plan was called off. Harkishan, who went to Hoshiarpur to participate in the event, remonstrated with the Congress office secretary to the effect that giving up on the plan was “an insult to the nation,” whereupon he was challenged to do it himself.

Braving army personnel who had orders to shoot, the schoolboy climbed up the stairs of the Hoshiarpur district court building, brought down the British flag, and hoisted the national tricolour. Narrowly escaping death and immediately jailed and tried, he mocked British rule by giving his name to the magistrate as “London Tore Singh” (“one who breaks London”). Sentenced to one year’s rigorous imprisonment, he asked the court, “Only one year?’ and had his jail sentence enhanced to four years. “Only four years?” he enquired of the magistrate who responded that, under this particular section of the law, he could not give him a longer jail term.

In Lahore’s Borstal Jail, Mr. Surjeet was treated roughly. His legs were chained when he was taken from one place to another. Many decades later, he recalled to an interviewer that a letter from his father asking him not to backtrack from the path he had chosen, and his illiterate Hindu mother’s encouragement, fortified him in his political resolve and shaped his future course. At the same time, he added, “the immense economic difficulties that we had to face had their impact and helped me to identify with the working class ideology and social revolution. I feel proud of what I did on that day.”

Comment: But 120 year old Congress party cannot take any action against any one of these situations:

1. Prime Minister involved an anti-national Deal. (Congress did not give reply of the questions by the Left or some scientists on the Deal).

2. Vayalar Ravi and A. K. Antony said many times that we have the magic numbers of 280+, when UPA was minority.

3. Pranab Mukherjee and A.K. Antony cheated the Left because they made programme to discuss with the Left, announced that they will go after discussion in Parliament and the same time they have contacted IAEA with safeguard agreement.

4. Controversy on Ahmed Patel against distributing money for BJP MPs. MPs have shown the money in Parliament and whole world seen that.

Still our Finance Minister Chidambaram is not speaking to the people well. He is so frustrated, because he is not able to fishing from muddy water, sell out the shares, privatise public properties etc.

People are singing on Congress at restaurants, parks, streets, buses, trains and public places, wherever they meet. Congress became smelly globally. It is a sinking ship. The alliance partners are not happy and they are ready to jump from the ship, because the travellers have no hope on the Captain.

Each and every media say the truth that the Left was good ally for the Congress. They never bargained for some seats, ministership, money, any other thing etc. They seldom wanted the Congress must work for people’s progress and implementation of CMP, as the Left parties are working for people’s welfare. Congress fell down in a huge confusion as the Left withdrawn their outside support from the UPA government. A little time will take Congress to stand aright. It is an outcome of 60 years’ anti-people policy. History will be written that Congress has broken its own leg to push the Left.

Now Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will seek for trust vote in the Parliament on July 22, after the Left withdrew its support. Congress is working overtime to bring the magic number of 272. Politicians, MPs and media says an MP gets 25 crores to vote in favour of the government, to move one party to another and abstain from voting.

The people will certainly punish, if government does not work for Indian poor or if work for American Bush.

Comment: Both Thackerays, Bal and Raj know how to beat each and every people separately. One has beaten people of UP, Bihar and other states. He succeeded to attack and kill Hindus, Muslims, Christians and many castes in one attempt. Now, another tries to kill innocent Muslims. It is the same idea what BJP produces, divide, frighten and kill to rule a long time.

Comment: This gentleman said in Kannur, Kerala that we will attack Communists where we have strength before two days from the AKG Bhavan attack on March 9, 2008. Venkaiah’s law of ‘do not take law’ is applicable for next one year. When his party will come to power, anybody can take law in hands to rape women, arson houses, act on ‘Tehelka serial’, frighten, kill etc. The happiest thing is that people recognise his skin colour is exactly same of the chameleon.

News: Union Minister Kapil Sibal said that Congress can’t share the text of the 1-2-3 agreement with the Left because a technical committee had negotiated it. He said, “Text is yet to go to the board of governors of IAEA, before which we can’t reveal it to the public. (Face the Nation programme on CNN-IBN on June 18, 2008).

Comment: Yes, Sibal ji, you and your Congress have been doing those works which cannot be revealed to the public for last 60 years. If left were not available here with 61 seats in Lok Sabha, people could not have recognised that what is 1-2-3. In the 60 years, first time an international deal came to public for discussion.

The fuel price hike is imposed on poor people after Congress is slapped or rejected in 13 Assembly elections in various states within 4 years after UPA government formed.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh directs us with globalisation and human face reforms for last 16 years. He seldom says India is growing. He has been saying the same thing for these long years. Now he says, tight your belts. 

UPA government has been imposing anti-people policies by day 1. Government was ready to increase Rs. 5 every month for LPG in the first month of UPA honeymoon. Left did not allowed. Left parties knew well that when they begin to sleep, Manmohan Singh and Chidambaram will take their working tools again. Left parties also knew there is nobody to save Indian poor than left. Congress has been continuously punishing people for last 60 years. Unite against UPA’s policies and be a part of the Left. 

From a mass-based organisation, the Congress started to reinvent itself as a cadre-based party, because only a committed cadre can remain permanently connected to the masses. But it is only workable when an idiot cadre will be trapped the leaders’ net. Every child knows today, the leaders are distributing shame , to the cadres as well as voters instead of fame. In this situation the whole burden will come on the head of them who permanently connected to the masses. 

Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh and Chidambaram might see the Bandh in left ruled states. North India should also come to the same line when Congress removes juice of the poor people. BJP has no policy to tackle UPA, so it compels the Left to withdraw support. It is unable to take the gun and shoot its own, but it puts the gun on other’s shoulder and shoot. BJP increased fuel price 14 times in 5 years of its own rule.

I wondered when I read this on my Hindu Newspaper next day. I managed to reach my village life. People in the village still believe in Ghost. According to them, ghost reaches out at midnight on Fridays like a cute lady, wears a white sari, spreads out her hair, and shows two lengthy teeth, etc. Ghost is cute, however, people live in fear.

Our minister Chidambaram is also in the same style, like villagers. He says a lot daily. He changes his tune on every seminar, whenever and wherever he appears. Our GDP is just near China’s GDP, we will go beyond China within a few years, growth brings inflation, do not afraid, I have no magic wand to bring down inflation, inflation will come down within 6 weeks, now change his tune to 6 months. According to his words, inflation is good; but above comment shows, still he lives is in fear, when every Friday reaches.

We seldom gave our votes for Congress for last 60 years… Now about 120 crores people who are hardworking in country like donkeys. However, they do not get sufficient food. 70% people earn below Rs. 20 per day. They are being looted by others in the name of price rise, corporate retailing, mobile connections, school fees, private electricity, private universities, etc.

People have started to think before vote. Election results from various states prove this thing without any confusion. Caste & religious fundamentalists compelled their followers to vote for goons, economists etc., but we did not know that those were crooked and corrupt MPs and MLAs. They have gained a lot of wealth. Media seldom helped them a lot to stay this situation here. No god is there to help the poor followers who are starving today.

His other words also should be noted. He said that political parties to refrain from scare-mongering, which could create an atmosphere of hoarding and scarcity, i.e. if somebody says the right thing, the hoarders will hear the words.

A lot of humanists, particularly from the Left parties, have been continuously warned for last 15 years that globalization will ruin our country in both levels, agriculture and economy. It occurred after a thorough study from the Latin American countries. It is true that history again proved that the globalization ruined our country, however, Manmohan Singh is not ready to accept it. His words, “the parties should not politicise the misery of the people” confirm this thing.

Indo-US nuclear bill is also another US attempt to dictate India directly, which is almost dead by the Left’s patriotism and continuous interference. FDI in retail sector could have been harmed much more in our agricultural sector.

When a person is elected by the people, he can recognise the pain of poor. But, unfortunately, our Prime Minister never contested even in a Panchayat elections. That is the reason he never knows the pain of Indian poor.

Hoarding, scarcity, price rise, inflation, malnutrition, lack of procurement etc. are the most affected problems faced by farmers and common men today. As far as the Left is concerned, it always takes up concerns of poor to the streets as well as Parliament. Only one way left out is that people must support the Left more and more.

The entire world media reported when Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) fascists attacked another national political party CPI(M)’s national headquarters A.K.G. Bhavan in New Delhi on March 9, 2008. Those goons attacked 5 Central Committee Members, 10 other supporters, shattered window panes of the building and damaged cars parked on the premises.

BJP leaders, with full of bricks and stones in their vehicles, including its Delhi unit chief Harsh Vardhan, Mayor Aarti Mehra, and Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly Jagdish Mukhi, and arrested 15 BJP leaders.

Harsh Vardhan has never said a word against his own goons attacked or killed the following holy places or person:

Vardhan also supports a ‘spiritual leader’ who are running through the US to find a favourable space when a total of 70 people, including 47 sportspersons, take part in the Olympic torch relay in New Delhi. He and media corporates project the spiritual leader is a Modern Gandhi. I like to stress one thing that these media do not recognise they are insulting our Mahatma in comparing with these ‘spiritual leaders’.

The interesting thing is the story is that the host of the ‘spiritual leader’ is world imperialism, who killed seven lakh innocent people in Iraq. I do not go to other countries who were brutally attacked in different occasions. We can see the entire cruel personalities are joining to attack the China and other socialist countries.
